Honey Kurlander (nee Wachtel), of Columbia, passed away on May 17, at the age of 98. She is survived by her loving children, Dr. Harold Kurlander; Dr. Susan (Richard) Madonna; adoring grandchildren, Michael (Noelle) Kurlander, Clifford (Lindsey) Kurlander, David Madon, Charles (Emma) Madonna, Jeffrey Madonna; precious great-grandchildren, Adam Kurlander, Jason Kurlander, and Sara Madonna. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Neale Kurlander; dear brother Sanford Wachtel; loving daughter-in-law, Helene Kurlander; and devoted parents, Sara and Charles Wachtel. Known professionally as H. W. Kurlander, she was passionate about many forms of art but especially painting. Her art was inspired by people, travels, antique automobiles, gardens, the bible, Greek mythology and many other subjects. Her work has won awards in many art competitions including shows juried by curators from the Guggenheim, Metropolitan and Whitney Museums. Her paintings have been exhibited in galleries throughout the world from New York to Washington, Chicago to Honolulu, Tokyo to Paris. Her work is in the permanent collections of several major corporations and universities both here and abroad as well as in many private collections.
