Last week, the Baltimore County Council elected former County Executive Kevin Kamenetz’s chief of staff Donald I. Mohler III to replace Kamenetz until a new county executive is elected and sworn in in January. Kamenetz, 60, died May 10 of cardiac arrest, leaving the county’s top seat empty.
Mohler joined the Kamenetz administration as chief of staff in 2010 after having served as County Executive James T. Smith’s acting chief of staff and communications director. Prior to that, he was in education, including as a social studies teacher, guidance counselor, principal and an area superintendent for Baltimore County Public Schools. Mohler holds a bachelor’s and a master’s in liberal arts, as well as a master’s and doctorate in education. He lives in Catonsville.
“I am truly humbled. This wasn’t supposed to happen. My friend and County Executive Kevin Kamenetz should be finishing his second term in office,” Mohler said in a statement. “Baltimore County has been through a lot over the last few weeks, including the tragic death of a police officer and the sudden loss of our County Executive. This is a time for everyone — county employees and communities — to come together and heal.”
“Baltimore County is strong,” he added. “As Jill Kamenetz so bravely said at her husband’s funeral service, ‘We will be OK.’ County government will continue to provide the services and public safety that our residents deserve. I am committed to making that happen.”
