As noted in your Sept. 19 editorial, for decades Qatar has had a double-dealing relationship with Washington, pledging friendship to the U.S. while at the same time providing a sanctuary for Hamas militants and pouring millions of dollars into Gaza.
Equally disturbing are the ties between Qatar and the Trump family. A Trump-branded luxury resort is being developed with Qatari Diar and DarGlobal, and up to $3 billion has been invested by the Qatari sovereign wealth fund into Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners investment firm.
Also, the Qatari royal family has invested $50 million in Newsmax, a conservative media outlet with ties to Donald Trump. Additionally, there are ethical and legal concerns about Trump’s acceptance of a luxury Boeing 747 jet from Qatar for an eventual home in his presidential library.
Despite these financial dealings between Trump and Qatar, not a word of concern has been expressed by Republican members of Congress or the Office of Government Ethics about the ethical issues and conflicts of interest related to Trump’s financial dealings. What a travesty!
