Wishful thinking
Letter writer Sidney Chernick (“The real situation at colleges,” June 18) should study University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Professor Cary Nelson’s book, “Israel Denial: Anti-Zionism, Anti-Semitism, & the Faculty Campaign Against the Jewish State” (2019). Nelson makes clear that, on many campuses in America, for a professor to fail to loudly and publicly condemn the existence of the only Jewish country in the world, Israel, is to strike the death knell into his or her career.
Unfortunately, Nelson’s conclusions are consistent with a recent survey by the University of Arkansas that demonstrates that the more educated you are in America the more antisemitic you are.
This survey, described in Tablet magazine on March 29 of this year, reveals that the long-held belief by liberals that education reduces antisemitism is false. Education in America increases antisemitism. Clearly the antisemitism that has infected American higher education for decades has had its desired effect.
