No Checks and Balances
Letter writer Philip S. Shapiro neglects the fact that, in America, Supreme Court justices are nominated by the executive branch (the president) and confirmed by the legislative branch (the Senate) (“Independent Judiciaries Protect Minorities,” May 12). In Israel, a committee controlled by three Supreme Court justices and their sycophants on the Israeli Bar Association decides who the Supreme Court justices are with no final input from the executive or legislative parts of the government. It is like Amy Coney Barrett selecting the next Supreme Court Justice. Where are the American values in such a system?
