On that date in 1942, 21-year-old Ruth Maleson was about to start her first year teaching kindergarten in Baltimore, and 24-year old Maurice Fluegel Levie was about to go into the army. Seizing the day, they went to see Rabbi Abraham Shusterman of Har Sinai, who interrupted a night out with his wife at the home of some friends to marry them. Five children, 6 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren later, their example has inspired many an elopement or simple wedding ceremony.

Maurice, 104, continues to beat everyone at chess and subscribes to countless newspapers and magazines. Ruth, 101, reads e-books voraciously and bestows ever-flowing matriarchal praise on everyone in her orbit. Together, they are devotees of desserts, Jeopardy, and breezes and views from their balcony.

Tributes in honor of their simcha may be made to Har Sinai-Oheb Shalom Congregation, and cards addressed to Maurice and Ruth Levie, 7121 Park Heights Ave., #303, Baltimore, MD 21215 will be received with deep appreciation and delight.
