Peña Nieto was the keynote speaker at a dinner last week in Mexico City to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Belfer Institute for Latino and Latin American Affairs of the American Jewish Committee.
“I am pleased to be here with members of the Jewish community in our country. They have been integrated into our society and are a part of it. Its members give their best for the development of our nation,” Peña Nieto said.
Some 600 Jewish officials from across Latin America and other guests attended the event held at the Centro Desportivo Israelita in Mexico City.
In a subsequent interview with a Jewish news agency, the president also praised the Jewish community of the United States for supporting the rights of Hispanic immigrants.
“The Jewish community is integrated and committed and is working in every place where it is,” Peña Nieto told the Agencia Jud’a de Noticias.
Mexico is home to more than 40,000 Jews, the third-largest community in Latin America after Argentina and Brazil.
