Joseph Weinstein was an influential figure in the Baltimore Jewish community during the 20th century as a writer for the Baltimore Jewish Times and a heavily involved figure in Jewish life, notably at Beth El Congregation and Chizuk Amuno Congregation.

Weinstein’s work and longstanding dedication to the Jewish community earned him recognition within Baltimore.

In this month’s “Remember When,” we’re going back to the Sept. 17, 1971, edition of the Baltimore Jewish Times, and an article titled “Beth El To Honor Joseph Weinstein At Testimonial.”

The article explained that Weinstein was to be honored at a testimonial dinner on Sept. 26, 1971, in Blue Crest North under the auspices of Beth El and the Baltimore Committee for Israel Bonds.

The article added that Julius Offit, the dinner chairman, said that the dinner was being held in conjunction with their High Holiday campaign to raise $450,000 in Israeli bonds.

“‘It is fitting,’ said Mr. Offit, ‘that our congregation has chosen to honor a man who for 50 years has been an active participant on the Baltimore Jewish scene. Joseph Weinstein has been a pillar of strength to Beth El, first as its executive director during the congregation’s crucial ‘growing up’ years, and in more recent years as a valuable member,’” the article said.

The article added that prior to serving the Beth El community, Weinstein was the executive director of Chizuk Amuno for 23 years and was honored through a testimonial dinner at that congregation several years prior.
