On Aug. 26, Stuart Schaftel peacefully, surrounded by his family, at his home in Florida. He was born on Nov. 20, 1930 in Baltimore to Joseph and Jeanette Schaftel. He was their oldest son to his twin brother Arnold Schaftel, who passed away in 2016, and to his younger brother Robert B. Schaftel. He leaves his wife of 67 years Barbara Lessans Schaftel; children Steven Schaftel, James Schaftel, Ronald Schaftel, Starr Schaftel Wayne, Joy Schaftel Benenson; and favorite pet Yorkie, Petunia Schaftel. He also leaves 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. His grandchildren knew him very well: Zachary Schaftel, Adam Schaftel, Benjamin Schaftel, Ryan Schaftel, Jeremy Schaftel, Kyle Schaftel, Sage Schaftel, Tess Schaftel, Harper Wayne, Laurel Wayne, Hayes Benenson and Bode Benenson. After graduating from Forest Park High School in 1949, he enlisted in the Army Reserve during the Korean War. He then began his life-long career at the J.B. Schaftel Insurance Company in 1950. Upon selling the family business in 1992, he continued working in the insurance business until his retirement in 2017. He was appointed and commissioned “Admiral of the Chesapeake Bay” in 1972 by then-Governor of Maryland Marvin Mandel. He loved boating with his family and spending summers in Ocean City with friends at the Ship’s Cafe “Tiki Bar.”
