Statement by Doug Gansler – 4th of July

Two hundred and thirty seven years ago, our founders gathered to boldly declare our independence and to set forth, in writing, our guiding democratic principle that all men are created equal, and endowed with certain unalienable rights, and that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Since that time, as a nation, we have rightfully, though sometimes painfully, come ever closer to fulfilling the promise implicit in that principle to include all people regardless of race, gender or sexual orientation.

Tomorrow, we will celebrate as Americans as we always have: by adorning our porch with the Stars and Stripes, by cooking on the grill, or by watching fireworks at sundown. In Maryland, many of us will continue our unique traditions of eating crabs with family and friends, gathering with our communities for a parade, or maybe enjoying a day on the beach in Ocean City.

However we celebrate tomorrow, please celebrate safely and responsibly. In addition, please take a moment to reflect upon the men and women who have served and those who continue to serve as members of our armed forces or members of our local first responders. It is only through their dedication and sacrifice that our celebrations are possible.

Have a happy and safe Independence Day.
