Unparalleled Opportunity

A subsidiary of the French railway won’t run two MARC commuter lines (“Looking Back on 5773,” Aug. 30), but we now have access to the company’s records from World War II.

This is an unparalleled opportunity to document the memory of those who perished, and those who survived, of the 70,000 people in France — Jews and others — who were interned and deported to Germany by SNCF, the French railway.

The United States Holocaust Mem-orial Museum and Yad Vashem are two of the depositories. The records are also available on the company’s website.

As the lead sponsor of the legislation that required SNCF to make its records available, I remain committed to bringing about a thorough scholarly examination and assessment of the data.
