On Feb. 5, Fortunato J. Mendes Jr. of East Providence, R.I., at 77. He was the son of Fortunato and Harriet Mendes. He grew up with sisters Maria Perry, Dorothy Shorts, Alethia Mitchell, Rev. Julia Doutaz and Harriot Sargent (deceased) and brother James Mendes (deceased). He is survived by children Fortunato Mendes III, Dr. Asante Mendes and wife Ruth Mendes, Andrea Martin and her husband Jeff Martin, Saidah Glass and her husband Dallas Glass, DeMarco Mendes and Solomon Jones and many grandchildren.
