On Dec. 23, Joseph I. Berman, M.D., M.P.H., of Frederick at 88. He is survived by partner Johanna Zimmerly; children Susan (Larry) Gordon, David (Karen) Berman and Daniel Berman; sister Sylvia Belkin; and grandchildren Elizabeth Gordon, Sarah (Aubrey) Batten, Jeremy Gordon, Abigail Berman and Samuel (Elizabeth) Berman. He was predeceased by wife Marjorie Freedman Berman and parents Morris and Lottie Berman. A graduate from the Boston Latin School, he went on to obtain his Bachelor of Arts at Clark University, his medical degree at Tufts University, his Master’s in Public Health from John Hopkins University and a Master’s in Liberal Arts in 2005 from Johns Hopkins University. From 1963–1965, he and his wife were stationed in Toul, France, where he was a physician in the Army. Following his Army posting, he began his career in Baltimore and began working at Sinai Hospital. In 1980, he started a position as the deputy secretary for the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Numerous jobs followed. Throughout his career, he strove to help those in need.
